The Dance of the Dragons is the flowery name bestowed upon the roughshod internecine struggle for the Atomic number 26 Throne of Westeros fought between two rival branches of House Targaryen during the years 129 to 131 Ac. To characterize the nighttime, turbulent, bloody doings of this period as a "dance" strikes us as grotesquely inappropriate. No doubtfulness the phrase originated with some singer. "The Dying of the Dragons" would be altogether more than fitting, but tradition and time accept burned the more poetic usage into The Trip the light fantastic toe of the Dragons is the flowery proper noun bestowed upon the vicious internecine struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros fought between 2 rival branches of House Targaryen during the years 129 to 131 Air-conditioning. To characterize the dark, turbulent, bloody doings of this menses as a "dance" strikes us as grotesquely inappropriate. No doubt the phrase originated with some singer. "The Dying of the Dragons" would be altogether more than plumbing fixtures, only tradition and time have burned the more poetic usage into the pages of history, so nosotros must dance along with the balance.

Almost ii centuries prior to the events of A Vocal of Ice and Fire, the virtually legendary civil war in the history of Westeros was fought betwixt rivalling claimants to the Iron Throne of the Targaryens. It would be known to posterity as the Dance of the Dragons.

This is one of the best novellas I have ever read. Many vivid fantasy authors accept problems writing novellas and brusque stories set up in the worlds of their sagas, but George R.R. Martin does not disappoint. The Dangerous Women anthology as a whole was a disaster, only this made it all worth it.

Scheming queens and spymasters, huge battles and duels on dragonback – this novella has it all and more. Exquisite writing in normal GRRM fashion, interesting characters like Lord Commander Criston Cole the Kingmaker (couldn't assistance simply using the full title) and a setting that's quite unlike the Westeros nosotros know from later times. Anything an ASoIaF fan could want.

Surprisingly, the novella also managed to innovate two of my favourite characters in the whole ASoIaF franchise. First out was Rhaenyra Targaryen, the lawful heir to the crown of her father Viserys. The usurpation of the Iron Throne by her younger half-brother Aegon unfortunately causes her to go a fiddling mad. A little meaning that she turns into something of a fantastic combo of Cersei and the Mad King. Fortunately, she makes up for it by being an absolutely magnificent character.

And as if that wasn't plenty, poor Rhaenyra is nowhere near being the nearly fascinating character in this novella. That award goes to her uncle, who is also her husband (these are Targaryens we're talking nigh). Daemon Targaryen is so ridiculously awesome he goes direct into my summit listing of ASoIaF characters (in fact most directly to the summit spot). Warrior, dragonrider, wielder of Dark Sis - Daemon is almost besides fabulous to fit into this brusk tale.

"Over the centuries, House Targaryen has produced both great men and monsters. Prince Daemon was both."

The merely curious thing, considering that this is a GRRM story with a huge cast of characters, is that at that place is really only one side of the conflict the reader will end up cheering for. Not but are all the all-time characters on 1 side (excepting the fabulous Lord Commander Criston Cole the Kingmaker), just Rhaenyra's claim to the Fe Throne is plainly the strongest one. Even her adversary brother Aegon realises this and proclaims her the truthful queen in the beginning of the story, but unfortunately his mother (may she burn forever in the Vii Hells) forces him to usurp the throne of his sister.

I would recommend this to all ASoIaF fans. It's a real treasure. I would also strongly recommend listening to the audiobook, wonderfully narrated by everyone'due south favourite Iain Glen.

"It was a war marked by stealth, murder, and betrayal every bit well, a war fought in shadows and stairwells, council chambers and castle yards, with knives and lies and poison."

The War starts after The Deaths of male monarch Viserys over his throne between his heir Princess Rhaenyra and his son Aegon II

The Blacks led by Rhaenya and Her husband Daemond Targaryens

The Greens led past Aegon II And Queen Alicent highwater

Nobles Commanders and Belligerents every bit usual cull their sides too in the war :

The story was a hell of a war was between 129 Ac - 131 Air-conditioning with thousands of deaths and the bloodiest bounding main battles in all of history of Westeros

The Fight under the God'southward Eyes between Aemond the king slayer \ Daemond the rogue prince was the most exciting moments ever and was a hell of a fight xD

** Some Facts and info about the war :

-I had Counted 62 kills between princes , princesses , lords , nobles And 17 dragons kills in this war .
-The Boxing in the Gullet was the bloodiest sea battles in all of history ninety ships \ 28 survived .
-History calls the struggle betwixt King Aegon II and his sister Rhaenyra the Trip the light fantastic of the Dragons, but only at Tumbleton did the dragons e'er truly trip the light fantastic.

*** Same as The Rogue Prince , The story deserve 5 stars but i gave information technology 4 coz it was like a history lesson and one of the nigh things i missed was the conversations between his characters and the dialogue .

BTW : My loyalty Goes to Rhaenyra as she is the heir and Daemond coz he is really badass xD.

It was the tale of a Targaryen civil state of war. The power struggle for the Iron Throne by Rhaenyra Targaryen and her brother Aegon Ii Targaryen. The story was every bit bloody as you lot might expect. Especially as back in this fourth dimension the Targaryen'due south had dragons to call upon!

Rating: five stars. Fantastic story. Cannot await to read the residual of the Westeros novellas.

Audio Note: This was read by Iain Glen who plays Ser Jorah in the GoT TV series. He does every bit good a task with this audiobook as he does in the Television receiver testify.

This is the best novella I have e'er read. The Princess and the Queen is the story of the Dance of the Dragons, between the years 129 to 131 Ac. To characterize the nighttime, turbulent, bloody doings of this menses as a "dance" strikes u.s.a. as grotesquely inappropriate. No doubt the phrase originated with some singer. "The Dying of the Dragons" would exist birthday more fitting, but tradition and time have burned the more poetic usage into the pages of history, and so we must dance along with the rest.

The story follows two rival groups of Targaryens, afterwards the death of King Viserys. Viserys declared his eldest child, Princess Rhaenyra as the heir to the Iron Throne, although his wife, Queen Alicent, has other ideas. Alicent wishes to place her son, Aegon, on the throne. The fallout betwixt the groups (known as the Blacks and the Greens) sparked a encarmine state of war for succession.

Whilst George RR Martin's primary serial is based off the Wars of the Roses, The Princess and the Queen parallels The Anarachy. The Anarchy was the English civil war between Empress Matilda and Stephen and is a fascinating period of history in itself (which would have been fifty-fifty more epic had at that place been dragons).

This novella has everything I love near ASoIaF, from the politics and power struggles to the battles with dragons. Martin'southward writing fashion, as usual, is outstanding and made me root for all the characters he introduced. Reading information technology from the Archmaester's point of view gave a fresh perspective, especially given Gyldayn debates the truth of sure events throughout.

For the most part, the story centres on Rhaenyra. It was like shooting fish in a barrel to empathise with her struggles as a woman trying to rule in a patriachal society. What made her character more compelling was the mistakes she made and their far-reaching consequences.

Another grapheme that shone was Rhaenyra's hubby, Daemon. An intelligent warrior, he had some of the best boxing sequences, and I would beloved to read a longer backstory about him.

From the start I was rooting for Rhaenyra'due south side, although Martin did not fail Aegon's character. Everyone suffers from setbacks and defeats of both large and small scale. Even the smallfolk had their part to play in this state of war.

The only negative I really accept is that I would have preferred to read this as a full-length novel. As this was and so brusk, nosotros didn't have the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of grapheme motivations.

Overall this was a very enjoyable read and I recommend this to whatsoever ASoIaF fan as a peachy companion to the principal series.

I never thought that I would enjoy reading this story that much ! , I was hooked from the showtime and finished it in one setting ! , even though the narration wasn't a favorite of mine (I don't trust/similar Measters ) .

it was a very interesting, typical Targaryen story full of conspiracies and threats and battles and flying and fire and blood .

I think most of you even those who didn't read it notwithstanding are familiar with the story because it was mentioned alot in ASOIAF , its about the tragic war over the iron throne between the children of rex Viserys I Targaryen and to exist more specific his girl from his first wife, Rhaenyra Targaryen and his son from the 2d, Aegon Targaryen.

I remember the reason why I gave it 4 rather than 5 is because I was still hungry when I finished ! I wanted more , I really wish we had POV capacity it would accept been more fun and more detailed , you can't be sure when you lot're reading the words of a measter who wasn't at that place.

ahhh what can I say ? Daemon Targaryen was an utter badass , I actually wish that there was more of him in the story ! and I hope that he's really happy at last abroad from this troubles, with Nettles *_*

Just like its predecessor it is basically a quasi-historical text attributed to certain Archmaester Gyldayn. It deals with the events of almost 200 years ago, which have no direct begetting on the main ASOIAF storyline. And despite having a ton of narration and very lilliputian dialog, and working with a agglomeration of unfamiliar characters, this novella turns out to be much more than fun, exciting and interesting read than Martin'due south latest novel, Dance WITH the Dragons. Which is actually quite distressing, when you lot think near it.

The Princess and the Queen starts off with the expiry of old Targaryen king Viserys I, which leaves the realm defenseless in dangerous rivalry between the supporters of Princess Rhaenyra, his daughter from his start marriage (and too his official heir), and the supporters of his second married woman who bore him 3 sons. Both Targaryen factions believe they take the law on their side, both have a agglomeration of influential lords in their ranks, they both accept dragons, and very little desire to reach whatsoever kind of compromise. Pretty before long, the state of war erupts on land, on sea and in the air, covering the realm with fire and blood.

Martin does a corking task of portraying both sides in this conflict with shades of grey, there are no clear good guys or bad guys hither, as even the characters who at certain points seemed to be the almost sympathetic or the most resourceful, sooner or later autumn victim to wrong decisions, animalism for power, or expose. The novella takes its fourth dimension to describe the fate of every important player in this conflict, and as they keep on dying in most gruesome, heroic, tragic or stupid ways, nosotros presently realize that nosotros are actually witnessing a spectacular end of the onetime Targaryen dynasty and, more than chiefly, the end of their supremacy over other houses based on the power of dragons. And while a few younger Targaryen princes will survive the conflict, and their heirs will continue to rule the realm all the mode upwardly to Robert's Rebellion, the dragons were non that lucky. Only 4 smaller and weaker beasts have seen the terminate of this war, and no other healthy dragon was hatched afterwards, and so in a few decades that followed the magnificent creatures accept perished from Westeros completely, as the globe moved from the age of myth and magic, into the age of roughshod medieval reality.

The Princess and the Queen audiobook was read by Iain Glen, who provides a good authoritative and mature voice to the text. Like I said, I enjoyed this novella very much, it is probably the 2nd best of all Martin prequels and then far (backside The Mystery Knight), and it left me with desire to learn more about the world and its by. That is, of grade, later the erstwhile chap finally puts his all-time endeavor and completes the original saga.

Blood and burn down, this was a expert read, although an actual story of information technology would be much more than welcome, instead of a tape of events.

all that being said i've just constitute out that this was used as a replacement all those years back (almost a decade!) for what was to be the quaternary dunk and egg story and at present i have no choice merely to hate this one for what it took for me!!!!! no amount of gory info dumping history will repair the final 12 years pass 😔😔

Westerosi history in all its bloody, treacherous celebrity.

It was slap-up and I loved the irksome-motion trainwreck that was a Targaryen civil war brought about by barefaced greed. Simply I feel I must have listened to an abridged version because it'southward more than a bit disruptive being bombarded with and then many names belonging to so many characters that are hardly fleshed out. Iain Glenn did a fantastic job, only I might give this story another go with the e-volume to see if it's more my speed.

I read the chief books of A Vocal of Ice and Fire in high schoolhouse and accept been awaiting the sequels e'er since (though my hopes are now greatly diminished). I was enthralled past this crawly world he has created ever since GoT, but I'chiliad too left to wonder if some of the more troubling criticisms of his work ring truer than I had initially wanted to believe.

That troubling criticism beingness that it'southward more than than possible that I am existence led on through these stories by the expectation that this multitude of characters and plot points will somehow be resolved in some neat and satisfying decision, a prospect that is condign less and less likely with every passing year that the series is left unfinished.

Grand as ASOIAF might exist, I'thousand concerned that it's all merely a neverending fantasy lather opera where the noble houses and mysterious organizations and ungodly forces are all but spokes on a perpetually rolling wheel with no true offset and no truthful cease.

Ah, who am I kidding. I'd read it anyway.

Let me relieve you some time: dragons tin be killed, and how! Where the Dunk and Egg novellas were some of the best writing in the Fire & Ice world (read those!), this is certainly the worst. Non and so much a story as a list of fights that happened with dragons. I've rated everything A Song of Water ice and Burn five stars and then far -- even A Banquet for Crows! -- because I look at the serial as one complete work, and each book gives a lot of detail to that complete piece of work. I understand that's how some folks look at Tolkien's work, too, so I don't see that equally being an unprecedented position.

With these two "stories," though, that trend stops. I wanted to like them. I liked the Dunk and Egg stories, so I expected this one to follow in the aforementioned vein, but what I got west

I've rated everything A Song of Water ice and Fire five stars then far -- fifty-fifty A Feast for Crows! -- because I expect at the serial equally one complete work, and each volume gives a lot of item to that complete piece of work. I understand that's how some folks await at Tolkien's work, too, so I don't run across that as beingness an unprecedented position.

With these two "stories," though, that trend stops. I wanted to similar them. I liked the Dunk and Egg stories, so I expected this one to follow in the same vein, but what I got was a couple of dry history lessons narrated past an old Maester. So much of the events in these stories were glossed over to the bespeak of them reading like analytical pieces and less like stories. At that place were antagonists and protagonists (or as shut every bit you can get to them in this series), and at that place were articulate conflicts and resolutions, only the lack of the indicate-of-view characters killed what interest I should accept had with these sto-- ... er, essays.

Taking the broad view, I can appreciate that they fill up in more of the Targaryen's history, and discover that a lot of the content here is reminiscent of what would normally be constitute in Westeros. Political machinations, deceptions, assassinations, battles, betrayals, and ability struggles are just the surface of what y'all'll find in these recountings of the Dance of Dragons. In fact, what's in these pieces could hands be the outline for another novel prepare in Westeros without it being part of the series proper. I but wish that Martin had treated them as such.

I mean, anyone who's interested in the series and the expanded history across just A Song of Water ice and Fire should read these stories. Just don't become expecting them to be anywhere shut as interesting as the series proper.

Finally got a concord of this! It reads like a weird sort of history lesson. Information technology doesn't follow in the footsteps of the other asoiaf books in terms of the grapheme POV's, instead we get a third person narrative. Information technology really work with this, as the scale of the war is so massive that it would accept ages for annihilation to happen if it was in a character POV format. So anyway, that out the fashion... OH MY GOD TARGARYEN CIVIL WAR Yep PLEASE

Finally got a hold of this! It reads like a weird sort of history lesson. It doesn't follow in the footsteps of the other asoiaf books in terms of the character POV's, instead we get a third person narrative. It actually work with this, as the calibration of the state of war is so massive that it would accept ages for anything to happen if it was in a character POV format. So anyway, that out the way... Nosotros finally get a look into the "Dance of the Dragons" and information technology'southward just so cruel and bloodthirsty and everything yous love GRRM for (except there's no unnecessary and frankly ridiculous sex scenes which for me is cracking). And it's encarmine brusk besides, so information technology'south a quick read for any fans of the asoiaf world who desire a little peep into Westerosi history.

If you're a new fan to asoiaf though Exercise NOT START WITH THIS you must read oat least game of thrones first, because as much as I beloved this, it's not a good standalone book. Unless you lot really dear the earth and the houses and the politics and manage to appreciate that you're finally getting a bit of that precious rich history that is alluded to in the other books, you lot won't be able to capeesh this. Because honestly like I said information technology's a bit of a history lesson - no massive characterisation or plot arcs or anything, information technology is equally is stated; a history of the events during the war between Queen Alicent and Princess Rhaenyra. (god how cool are targ names I mean seriously rhaenyra).

Douse and Egg are more lighthearted and smaller. This and the Rogue Prince are told equally histories and center effectually one of the bloodiest civil wars in all of Westeros. Truly, this makes a lot of things that happen in the master series seem tame by comparing, and this civil war could easily be a 1,000 pages novel, but I think, stylistically and tonally, it would then wander a lot of the same roads as the main serial, so it's interesting to see this kind of story told and so differently.

Merely, yeah, this is solid stuff. Seriously, so many dragons fighting one another. It'due south just awesome.

Since this is written in the manner of a history rather than the more familiar narrative style of the Song of Water ice and Fire novels and the Douse and Egg stories, I'd recommend information technology merely for those who are already immersed in Martin's world and are hungry for more. The album, however, as a whole is first grade. Kudos to George RR Martin & Gardner Dozois for making it then.
